The George Inn is a beautiful 15 th century pub set in the heart of picturesque Chardstock, right on the Devon , Dorset and Somerset borders. It was originally a Church or Parish house where people would gather after services to taste the beer brewed by two church nominated wardens. All the pastry dainties for the religious feast days were prepared in our kitchen and they have been celebrating anything they can get away with here ever since! In fact some of the customers over the years have loved the pub so much that they are still hanging around and we have several ghosts.
Evidence for the age of the building can be seen in the graffiti in the snug and lounge bar windows where the names and initials can be traced back through many generations of local families. The pub still maintains many original features such as old oak and linen fold panelling. The linen fold in the Lounge Bar is said to be one of the finest examples in the country and was in a ships cabin and a church before it arrived at the George Inn and it has been here for several hundred years!
We have three real ales on the bar at all times with Otter Bitter as our best bitter. We only use beers from local breweries, The Otter Brewery and Branscombe Vale Brewery being particular favourites. This year we are really pleased to have gained a coveted entry in the Good Beer Guide 2005.
Our Food is traditional and Modern dishes all prepared from the finest local produce. We have a very extensive menu varying from old favourites to fresh fish and gourmet dishes. Saturday is our busiest night so it is advisable to book in advance.

The George Inn has always been the heart of the village and it has a wonderful warm atmosphere to go with its bustling trade, especially on Thursday (Skittles Night), Friday and Saturday. Several of the locals have been drinking in the George for more than 40 years and they are always happy to expound on the changes that have taken place in the pub over the years. They can usually be found in compost corner of an evening. In compost corner you will also find the works of our resident poet Mr Arthur Lord. Arthur’s poems chronicle the events in the pub and village over the last 20 years and offer a rare, and sometimes startling, insight into village life.
Summer nights are best spent enjoying the courtyard under the fairy lights either as a romantic evening for two or in the company of friends and as we also serve meals out doors it is a lovely way to cool off after a long hot summer afternoon.
Winter nights can be spent chatting with the locals, playing Cribbage, Draughts, Dominoes or even Scrabble. With all the fires lit this is a wonderful place to relax and unwind against a background of murmured conversations, raucous laughter and the occasional dirty joke.
Make no mistake, this is a proper Inn .
